Afghan Community Advocate

Availability: ASAP. Position will remain opened until a suitable candidate is found.

Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and will continue until the position is filled.

Non-Exempt, part-time and full-time positions available, Monday-Friday 9am - 5pm; occasional weekend or evening hours

$17.50-$20/hour, depending on experience

 

Job Summary

The Afghan Community Advocate provides direct services, education, and advocacy to Afghan community members in Lincoln. This position assists individuals and families in navigating systems, accessing community resources, and overcoming language and cultural barriers. The Advocate supports clients through case management, community health and civic education, and domestic violence advocacy while building trust and strengthening connections between the Afghan community and service providers.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Direct Services and Case Management

  • Conduct comprehensive intakes and assessments to identify client needs, goals, and priorities.
  • Provide ongoing case management, systems navigation, and advocacy to support access to housing, healthcare, education, employment, and public benefits.
  • Connect clients with culturally and financially appropriate resources to promote stability and self-sufficiency.
  • Provide interpretation and translation assistance when needed to ensure clients can effectively communicate with service providers.
  • Provide transportation for clients to essential appointments when necessary.

Community Education and Outreach

  • Deliver community health, civic engagement, and domestic violence education within the Afghan community.
  • Recruit participants for programs using community contacts and trusted relationships.
  • Identify emerging needs within the Afghan community and share feedback with program leadership to inform responsive programming.
  • Collaborate with community partners, schools, and human service agencies to ensure coordinated support for clients and families.

Program Support and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate case files and ensure data is entered promptly into agency databases.
  • Prepare timely monthly and quarterly reports on services provided, client outcomes, and outreach activities.
  • Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions to stay informed and maintain compliance with grant and program standards.
  • Represent the organization and program at community events, meetings, and public forums in a professional and culturally responsive manner.
  • Greet and assist walk-in clients, connecting them to appropriate staff or resources as needed.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to work occasional evenings or weekends to meet client or community needs.
  • Must maintain confidentiality and adhere to organizational and grant-related policies and procedures.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bilingual in English and Pashto and/or Dari, including speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in social services or community-based work, may include volunteer experience.
  • Familiarity with Lincoln’s social service network and community resources.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across cultural and language differences.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation, organization, and flexibility in managing multiple responsibilities.
  • Commitment to serving immigrant and refugee communities with empathy and respect.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and willingness to transport clients as needed.

Preferred

  • Experience providing direct client services to immigrant or refugee populations.
  • Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics and available community supports.
  • Basic proficiency in data entry and recordkeeping systems (e.g., Microsoft Office, client databases).

Physical Requirements

Some physical activity, including activities with youth, may be required. Extended periods of sitting in front of a computer.
